Ajatar

spirit · Finland · Nordic

Ajatar (also Ajattara, Aijotar) is an evil female forest spirit in Finnish folklore, described with hair reaching her heels and breasts to her knees (like Swedish Skogsrå). Connected to Hiisi and Lempo, she spreads disease and pestilence. Closely associated with serpents — in runic songs, the snake originates as 'a twig in Aattara's fence'.
