Alicanto

bird · Chile · South America

Alicanto is a legendary bird of Chilean mining folklore, especially the Norte Chico region. It is said to feed on gold and silver, and its metallic plumage glows with an eerie light that attracts miners hoping to follow it to hidden ore deposits. Miners who look away or grow greedy are said to lose the bird and their way in the mountains.
