Anansi

trickster · Ivory Coast · West Africa

In the Ivory Coast, the spider trickster of the Akan appears as Kacou Ananzè among the Baoule and other Akan peoples, who carry the same story cycle across the border from Ghana. Kacou, like Kwaku, is the day-name of a boy born on Wednesday, and his tales of outwitting larger beasts, gods, and neighbours belong to the shared anansesem tradition.
