Angara (River Spirit)

spirit · Russia · Central Asia

Angara is the personified river spirit of Buryat folklore, a beautiful maiden whose flowing hair becomes the river's current and whose robes are woven of blue-green water, moving swiftly forward without looking back. Determined and rebellious, she defies her father, the lake spirit Baikal, for love; her escape represents the unstoppable force of the river flowing from Baikal to the Yenisei.
