Ankou
The Ankou is the death-cart driver of Breton tradition, a gaunt, skeletal figure who collects the souls of the dying in a creaking wagon (karrig an Ankou); the sound of its wheels is an omen of death. By custom, the last person to die in a parish becomes the Ankou for the following year. Parallels appear in Cornish (Ankow) and Welsh (Angau) tradition.
