Anpo

deity · United States · North America

Anpo (Anpao) is the spirit of dawn in Lakota mythology, created by Inyan to bring light to Maka when she complained of cold and darkness. Anpo's red light illuminated the world, but it was not enough for Maka, leading to the creation of Wi the Sun. Later, when Maka complained of being too hot, Skan decreed that Han (darkness) and Anpo should follow each other around the world, creating the cycle of day and night. Anpo represents the first light of creation, the transition from darkness to illumination
