Asanbosam

vampire · Ghana · West Africa

Vampiric tree-dweller of the Akan peoples of southern Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and 18th-century Jamaica. It has iron teeth, pink skin, long red hair and iron hooks for feet, hangs in tall forest trees and drops on passers-by to drink blood and flesh. It punishes hunters who break forest rules; the Akan read it as a warning against over-hunting and sacred groves.
