Asase Yaa is the great earth goddess of the Akan people, second only to Nyame in the pantheon. As the wife of Nyame (or Nyankopon), she is the mother of all life and the foundation of the material world. Asase Yaa has two aspects: Asase Yaa (the elder, representing the dry/barren earth and the realm of the dead) and Asase Afua (the younger, representing the fertile earth and agricultural abundance). Thursday is her sacred day — farmers do not work the land on Thursday in her honor. She is also the mother of Anansi the trickster in some traditions. As the goddess of truth, oaths sworn upon her
