Asema
The asema is a vampire-witch of Afro-Surinamese legend: an old man or woman by day who sheds the skin at night and flies as a blue ball of light to suck blood from sleeping victims. Householders ward it off with garlic, bitter herbs, or seeds scattered on the floor, which the asema must stop and count; it must reclaim its skin before sunrise or it is destroyed.
