Atabey (also called Atabex) is the supreme mother goddess of the Taino people, the goddess of fresh water, fertility, and the moon. She is the feminine counterpart to her son Yocahu -- and in Taino belief, she conceived Yocahu without a male partner (Maorocoti), making him a virgin-born god. Atabey is the primordial mother who represents the nurturing, life-giving forces of nature: freshwater springs, rivers, rain, the moon, childbirth, and fertility.
