Âu Cơ is the beautiful mountain fairy and founding mother of the Vietnamese people. Daughter of Đế Lai (a descendant of the divine Shennong), she was a tiên (immortal fairy) who lived in the snow-capped mountains and traveled to heal the sick with her medical skills. She married the dragon lord Lạc Long Quân and gave birth to an egg sac that hatched one hundred children — the ancestors of all Vietnamese people.
