Aunt Nancy is the African American adaptation of Anansi the Spider, the famous trickster figure of West African Akan folklore. In the transatlantic journey, the male spider Anansi became feminized as 'Aunt Nancy' (a pun on 'Anansi'). Aunt Nancy retained the spider's core trickster qualities — cleverness, greed, and the ability to outwit larger and more powerful beings — but was reimagined within the context of African American plantation life.
