Bäckahästen

spirit · Sweden · Nordic

The bäckahästen (brook horse) is a Swedish manifestation of the näcken water spirit. It appears as a magnificent white or dappled horse near streams and fords. When mounted, it lengthens to accommodate more riders, then dashes into deep water to drown them. It can be controlled by carving a cross on its back or knowing its true name. Closely parallels the Scottish kelpie and Norwegian nøkken.
