Bækhesten (the Brook Horse) is a water spirit in Danish folklore that appears as a beautiful, majestic white horse emerging from streams and rivers, especially in foggy weather. It lures children and unwary travelers onto its back with its gentle appearance, but once mounted, the rider cannot dismount — the horse's back lengthens to accommodate more riders, and it gallops into the deepest part of the water to drown them.
