Bøygen (also written Bøyg, Bøygen) is a monstrous serpentine creature in Norwegian folklore, most famously featured in Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt where it is described as a huge, invisible worm that smothers its victims. In authentic folk tradition, bøygen is a shape-shifting dragon-like being that coils around its prey and crushes them. Particularly associated with the Gudbrandsdalen and Østlandet regions.
