Badi

ancestor-spirit · Chad · Central Africa

Badigi, singular badi, are the dead conceived of in their afterlife. A badi is usually a deceased father or mother, and can attack people and bring misfortune in the same way as a besi. Proper mortuary ritual transforms the deceased into a badi; without it, the dead do not attain that status. Illness is believed to result from the action of a besi, a badi, or a sorcerer, and divination identifies which.
