Baku

spirit · Japan · East Asia and Pacific

Baku is the dream-devouring yōkai of Japanese tradition, a chimera with a bear's body, elephant's head and tusks, rhinoceros ears, ox tail, and tiger paws. Children call 'Baku-san, come eat my dream' three times after nightmares, and baku talismans guard beds. A hungry baku may devour good dreams too, taking hopes away; the name also became the Japanese word for tapir.
