Bakwa is the legendary Snake King of the Kalinago people of Dominica — a great diamond-crested serpent with magical powers that slithered out of the sea and took residence in a cave in the mountains. According to the ancient Kalinago legend retold by children of Atkinson School, Bakwa used his powers to grant wishes to those who approached him with respect. Maruka, a Kalinago farmer, was the first to discover Bakwa and receive his blessings. The legend is associated with L'Escalier Tete Chien (Staircase of the Snake), a natural rock formation resembling a staircase rising from the Atlantic Oce
