Barama
Barama is a culture hero and ancestral figure in the mythology of the Elema people of the Gulf of Papua, Papua New Guinea. He is credited with introducing essential cultural practices, including the famous Hevéhe ceremony — a elaborate cycle of masked dances and rituals that mark important transitions in community life. Barama taught the people how to build spirit houses (eravo), carve and wear ceremonial masks, and perform the complex rituals that maintain the balance between the human and spirit worlds. The traditions established by Barama continue to be practiced today in villages along the
