Batammariba Ancestor Spirits

guardian · Togo · West Africa

Ancestor veneration is the foundation of Batammariba (Tamberma/Somba) religion of the Atakora Mountains in Togo and Benin. The dead dwell in earthen cone-altars within the takienta tower-houses, and the people call themselves Serpent Children of an underground Serpent Mother. Initiation rites and ritual consult the ancestors, who are held to govern the land and community.
