Beaivi is a deity from Sápmi mythology. In the Arctic regions of Sapmi where winter darkness lasts months, she was the most important divine figure. She travels through the sky with her daughter Beaivi-nieida in an enclosure covered with reindeer bones and antlers, bringing spring and light. The Sami believed that madness and depression were caused by her absence during the dark winter months. On the winter solstice, white reindeer were sacrificed in her honor to ensure her return — their meat threaded on sticks bent into rings and tied with bright ribbons in the Festival of Beaivi.
