In the Tsimshian tale 'The Bear Who Married a Woman,' a young woman is courted at night by a suitor with rough palms, and each dawn a larger sea animal lies on the beach. When her mother keeps watch, a red bear rises from the water carrying a whale on each side; discovered, he turns to stone, a supernatural being of the sea.
