Bear Spirit of Paiute

spirit · United States · North America

Bears figure among the mythic animal-people of Paiute and Great Basin tradition. Ethnographic sources record Bear as an anthropomorphic animal progenitor of the pre-human age, and Northern Paiute narratives include 'Bear and Fawns.' 'Bear Spirit' is a general label for this attested bear role rather than a single named figure; the central culture heroes are Wolf (Isa) and Coyote.
