Bear Water-Spirit of Muisca

water-spirit · Colombia · South America

Not independently attested in folklore literature. Muisca religion has no bear water-spirit; the figure conflated here is Nencatacoa (Nem-catacoa), the bear- or fox-shaped patron of weavers, artists, and drunken festivities on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, recorded by chronicler Pedro Simón. He is a celebration deity, with no attested link to water or lakes such as Guatavita.
