Bedimo

ancestor-spirit · Cameroon · Central Africa

Bedimo (sing. edimo) are the dead and ancestral spirits of the Duala and related Bantu peoples of southern Cameroon. They are defined in opposition to the baweňa, the living, who are pure and preserved from corruption; Nyambe is called the father of both. The bedimo are the dead in their other-world condition, and they remain in relation to the living through ancestor rites and offerings. The notion is central to Bahoken's account of Duala cosmology and the place of the dead.
