Bell Witch
The Bell Witch is the most famous supernatural entity in American folklore, said to have tormented the Bell family of Robertson County, Tennessee, from 1817 to 1821. While white accounts describe the witch as the ghost of Kate Batts, African American oral traditions viewed the Bell Witch through a different lens — as a 'haint' connected to the horrors of slavery itself. Enslaved people on the Bell plantation interpreted the entity as a spirit born from the suffering of the enslaved, and some described it as a Boo Hag-like entity that could shed its skin and fly. The enslaved community used the
