Bemba

deity · Mali · West Africa

Bemba (also called Maa Ngala or simply Ngala) is the supreme creator god of the Bambara people of Mali who created himself as a quaternity of four beings: Pemba (male, earth/air), Mousso Koroni Koundye (female, fire), Faro (female, water), and Ndomadyiri (male). Hermaphroditic in nature, Bemba encompasses both masculine and feminine creative principles. He existed before all things as Koni, the primordial energy, and brought the universe into being through a series of emanations. Bemba is distant and all-powerful, approached through the six initiation societies that form the backbone of Bambar
