Asiman

shapeshifter · Benin · West Africa

The asiman is the vampire-witch of Fon (Dahomey) tradition in Benin: an ordinary woman by day who, at night, leaves her body and flies as a corpse-candle or ball of light. She drains blood from sleeping victims, especially children, then shapeshifts into an animal; only in that animal form can she be destroyed. She is kin to the Ashanti obayifo and the Ewe adze.
