Bhoot

ghost · Myanmar · Southeast Asia

A bhoot is the ghost of a person who died violently, prematurely, or without proper funeral rites in South and Southeast Asian folklore, remaining earthbound to haunt the site of death. Referenced in Sanskrit texts such as the Garuda Purana and familiar across Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist cultures, bhoots are warded off with rituals, charms, and priestly intervention.
