Bison Deity of Choctaw

deity · United States · North America

Not independently attested in folklore literature. The Nanih Waiya emergence mound is genuine Choctaw tradition, but no Great Buffalo deity appears in Choctaw creation accounts; buffalo entered the Choctaw homeland relatively late. The agricultural bison-spirit role, hide-for-shelter migration story, and 'every part of the buffalo' teachings are invented.
