Botamochi bakemono
An obscure yokai said to haunt old wooden houses. The name pairs 'botamochi' (a spring-equinox sweet rice cake) with 'bakemono' ('transforming thing'). It lives under the floorboards, mimicking human voices to confuse, frighten, or amuse — imitating family at night. Unlike malevolent oni or yurei, it is a harmless prankster, among 'house yokai' like the Zashiki-warashi and Makura-kashi.
