Bouki (Haitian Trickster Hyena)
Bouki is the slow-witted, greedy hyena trickster of Haitian folklore -- the eternal foil to the clever Rabbit (or Malis/Connen, the rabbit trickster). In classic Haitian folktales, Bouki is always scheming for an easy meal or some treasure, and he is always outsmarted by the clever rabbit, suffering humiliation or injury. Bouki represents the dangers of greed, gluttony, and stupidity. Unlike the clever Anansi or the sneaky Malis rabbit, Bouki thinks he is cunning but is fundamentally foolish. His name derives from the Wolof word mbouki (hyena) from Senegal, proving his West African origins. Bo
