Bouki (Hyena)
Bouki the Hyena is the greedy, foolish, and constantly hungry foil to Leuk the Hare in Wolof folklore. Bouki is the classic trickster's dupe — always falling for Leuk's schemes due to her insatiable appetite and lack of foresight. In each tale, Bouki's greed, laziness, and carelessness lead to her downfall. Whether building a ladder, making a cooking pot, or thatching a roof, Bouki rushes her work while Leuk does it properly — and Bouki inevitably suffers the consequences. Bouki also appears in stories with other characters, such as the old woman whose magic horn she borrows and never returns.
