Buggane

entity · Isle of Man · Europe

The Buggane is a huge, ogre-like, shapeshifting being of Manx folklore, sometimes likened to a Scandinavian troll. Its best-known feat was tearing the roof from St Trinian's Church at the foot of Greeba Mountain three times in a rage. Bugganes could not cross water or stand on hallowed ground, and were sometimes called upon by the fairies to punish mortals who had offended them.
