Bukwus (Wild Man of the Woods)

spirit-animal · United States · North America

Bukwus (Bakwas) is the wild man of the woods in Kwakwaka'wakw tradition, a small green spirit with a skeletal face and long curving nose. He prowls the deep forests, whistling to lure the living toward the realm of the dead; some accounts name him the husband of Dzunukwa, the Cannibal Woman, and his masked figure appears in the winter ceremonial.
