Bumba

creator-deity · Democratic Republic of the Congo · Central Africa

Bumba is the creator in the Kuba creation story of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the beginning of time he was seized by painful cramps and vomited the sun, the moon and the stars; the sun evaporated the waters, and he vomited again, bringing forth nine animals and then a great number of people. The myth belongs to a wide Bantu complex in which the python or rainbow serpent is the supreme being or chief of the terrestrial animals; de Heusch identifies the Kuba Bumba with Mbumba, the rainbow serpent of the western Bantu.
