Bunzi

deity · Congo · Central Africa

Bunzi is a supreme female deity of the Woyo and Vili of the Loango kingdom, in present-day Republic of the Congo. She is the queen of all earth spirits and the mistress of the aquatic spirits; in the Yombe version of the myth she was male, and the change of sex is a recurring feature of these superior spirits. The cult of Mbumba and Bunzi once extended across much of the Kongo linguistic area, sometimes together and sometimes separately. Among the Woyo, a nkisi animated by Mbumba protected warriors, and Mbumba was invoked at clan-chief installations 'so that he may help the children'.
