Chaac (Chaahk)

deity · Guatemala · Mesoamerica

Chaahk, the Maya thunder-and-rain deity of lowland Guatemala, snorts rain through his long curling nose, wields a lightning axe and wears fangs and shell ear ornaments. He lives in clouds, mountain caves and cenotes and must be appeased with offerings, for his four colored directional aspects can unleash destructive storms or withhold the rain that the cornfields need.
