Chameleon (Messenger of God)

culture-hero · Malawi · Southern Africa

In Yao creation tradition of Malawi the chameleon, messenger of the god Mulungu, sets fish traps in the primordial waters and one day draws up the first man and woman, whom God bids him release to grow to maturity. Among the Chewa the chameleon bears the message of immortality, delayed by the lizard that brings death instead — a motif shared across Bantu and Kikuyu traditions.
