Cougar Animal-Spirit of Maliseet
The Cougar Animal-Spirit of the Maliseet people is a guardian figure from the Wabanaki Confederacy traditions of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. The Maliseet, also known as Wolastoqiyik, have a rich oral tradition that includes powerful animal spirits who act as intermediaries between the human world and the Great Spirit. Cougars, also called eastern mountain lions, once roamed the forests of Maliseet territory along the Saint John River valley and were respected as powerful hunting spirits.
