Cougar Deity of Cheyenne

deity · United States · North America

No cougar deity is attested in Cheyenne tradition. In the Cheyenne story of 'The Woodpecker's Mother-in-Law' the mountain lion stands for courage, but it is a story figure, not a god. Cheyenne divine power belongs to Maheo and the Sacred Powers; the mountain lion never held deity status in documented Cheyenne religion.
