Cougar Deity of Paiute

deity · United States · North America

In the Numic traditions of the Great Basin, the legend 'The Wolf, the Fox, the Bobcat and the Cougar' tells how these four animal spirits helped the Shoshone-Bannock and related Paiute peoples defeat the Nimerigar, cannibalistic little people who shot poisoned arrows. The cougar appears as a heroic spirit ally, not a deity.
