These spirits belong to a complex hierarchy of supernatural beings including ancestral spirits, nature deities, and the distant high god. The cougar spirit specifically oversees transition zones where cultivated fields meet wild forests, acting as a regulator of the relationship between human settlement and untamed nature. Kikuyu folklore teaches these spirits were placed during the age of origins when the first parents Gikuyu and Mumbi established the nine clans and received the land as a sacred trust from Ngai himself
