Coyote Spirit of Shoshone
In Shoshone tradition from the Great Basin region of the western United States the coyote spirit of the springs occupies a central place in mythology of water and survival in the arid landscape. For the Shoshone people, springs were the most precious natural features in the desert environment, providing reliable water sources enabling human habitation across vast sagebrush country. The coyote spirit associated with these springs gained its guardianship during the creation period when the Shoshone culture hero Wolf organized the natural world and assigned protective duties to animal spirits.
