Crane Water-Spirit of Kazakh
In Kazakh tradition the crane (turna) is an honored bird of the steppe, its cry read as a voice of longing and its spring arrival as a promise of renewal. The picture of a crane spirit watching over lakes and rivers grows from this reverence and from Turkic belief in bird spirits that tend the waters, though no such named guardian is recorded in Kazakh sources.
