Cunjah Maum (also spelled Conjure Maum or Conjure Mum) is an archetypal figure in African American folklore — an elderly wise woman who practices conjure and rootwork. 'Maum' is a Gullah/Geechee and African American vernacular term for an older woman (from 'ma'am' or West African linguistic roots). Cunjah Maum is the female counterpart of the Conjure Doctor, serving as the community's spiritual advisor, healer, and protector.
