D Sonoqua Dzunukwa Kwakwaka Wakw
Dzunukwa, the Wild Woman of the Woods, is a giantess of Kwakwaka'wakw tradition with a black face and sunken cheeks. She steals children and is feared as an ogress, yet she is also enormously wealthy and powerful, and the red-cedar bark she favors gives ritual strength. Her image appears in masks, the winter ceremonial world, and the art of Emily Carr.
