nature-spirit · Bangladesh · South Asia

Dakkhin Rai (sometimes spelled Dakshin Rai) is a powerful tiger spirit and demon-king who rules the Sundarbans mangrove forest, the world's largest delta shared between India and Bangladesh. According to Bengali folklore, particularly the Bonbibi tradition, Dakkhin Rai was a shape-shifting tiger demon who demanded human sacrifices from those who entered his forest domain. He is described as the king of the southern region (dakshin meaning south), and his rule extended over the dense, treacherous mangrove forests. He would appear as a man or as a Bengal tiger, using his shapeshifting abilities
