Deer Spirit (Khmer)

spirit · Cambodia · Southeast Asia

In Khmer tradition, deer spirits are forest guardians that embody the life-giving force of springs and water sources. Cambodian animist beliefs recognize nature spirits known as Neak Ta that inhabit trees, rocks, streams, and springs, with deer spirits being among the most revered for their gentle yet powerful presence. These spirits are considered intermediaries between the human world and the realm of ancestral spirits, often appearing in times of environmental distress to remind communities of their duty to protect the forests and waters that sustain them
