Den Vilde Jæger (the Wild Huntsman) is the Danish version of the Wild Hunt, led by King Valdemar Atterdag (reigned 1340–1375). According to legend, Valdemar loved his castle Gurre Slot so much that when God offered him Heaven, he replied: 'Keep Your Heaven — I want to stay at Gurre!' As punishment, he was condemned to hunt across Sjælland for eternity with black horses and dogs with flaming mouths.
